Save The Date!! May 30th/Addiction & foster care

Hi blog family!
I know it has been a while! I hope college is going well, we have had: Tashawna, Sasha, Odawa, Dottie, Mercy and a few others graduate since I last wrote to you!
Youth without parents are getting their degrees, when we follow them through! I know these youth would have still excelled without us, but we believe a side cheerleader is needed.

May 30th is our 6th annual Robert Cooper Memorial Scholarship Event we do for Foster Care Awareness Month Event!
If you are a business owner and would like to sponsor our event or donate and have your name in our program, please call 914-646-4638 or email fosterkidsuniteinc@gmail.com

Advice
Addiction and Foster Care
As I work in the field of addiction, I say to you that the amount of youth that will end up in foster care or kindred care will rise again. New Drugs that are harder to kick are keeping woman and men out longer and sometimes, they will not make it back. So many overdoses from phytanyl, its startling.
If we can give any advice, I ask why would you want your kids to be raised by your parents IF they were the reason you were out on drugs?
If they hide or don't tell information when you were a child and you got hurt, they certainly have not changed unless the family went into therapy.
I am so thankful my mom chose to leave us in foster care and not place us with a dysfunctional family. While I was molested by two foster brothers starting at 9 years old in care, I recieved an education and sense of travel, i never would have gotten had I stayed with "family". While they are all doing great now, (the cousins that lived, some of my mothers siblings died from addiction,
I do miss being a part of a family but I have my girls and I am so thankful for them.

2020 is a year of finding self and finding our greatness. You can do it, without family and with a good community and friends! #focus #divine

keep moving forward

Hi blog family!

Big thanks to all our sponsors: LaFamilia, Café Of Love, Target, Tom, (Kayaking), Arielle (stylist), New York Dolls, Elephants Trunk, Kabob Station, Joanie Landau Designs, Chico's, Shoprite and our intern Tatiana. None of the work is possible without all of us volunteering our time and our gifts- much thanks!

hope your having a great school year and that you are moving toward your greatness. If your a foster parent or social worker, I hope you are moving your children you work with to their greatness!
How do you do that?
1. look for their God given talent: singing, dancing, writing, art, making things, good with numbers, ANYTHING THEY EXCEL AT MORE THAN OTHERS...is probably their gift OR a key to finding their gift!

So many kids in foster care are focusing on where they will live day to day or fending off abusive people, they don't have time to focus on what THEY want to offer the world.
I say to all my kids, you have to be first in your TODO list!!! NOTHING gets complete without YOU setting the tone. Find a mentor, practice but keep doing what you think is your special talent from God, (that would not be you sounding good in the shower that would be EVERYONE telling you daily when they hear you sing, that you have amazing voice...) lol see the difference? We don't ever want to lie to ourselves. As a foster kid, you KNOW more about you than anyone, learn to use it to your advantage by finding out what is it the universe wants me to do? What is the message I bring to this world? How will I give this message?

No stress express as my friend Helen says in Yoga....breath, think about what you can do and how and then....like NIKE  JUST DO IT!!! Eventually if you hang around people doing what YOU want to do, you will be closer to your dream. You can always email me or inbox me.

The Transition That Never Happend

Hello Blog family!
I hope you are having a great summer!
( I have no idea why red is underlining, please forgive me)...

Why is it that young people leaving transitional homes are becoming homeless?

Money has been given in the form of grants, so that those who take the grants will hopefully avoid this.
I have encountered 3 homeless youth who were all in transitional housing.
A transitional home should  be set up to take in those aged out who are working or going to school. A transitional home should be set up to take a portion of their earnings and put into an account that they cannot touch until they leave, therebye providing them with security and a savings.

I think all foster care agencys should be required to open a trust account, (money in only and only the child who once aged out or leaves, can access the money..

When I aged out the first time I had NO money.
When I finally aged out again at 21, (I had to sign myself back in at 18, I had NO family and I refused to visit a home where my abuser still stayed).
I have been homeless 3x, yes 3...and I vowed it would never happen again.

It pays to have friends,  a true friend would allow you to stay in their home

I was blessed to become a model but sadly,  I  never saved my money. I,  survived because friends took me in.and I always found work. I stayed away from drugs, bad or mean people and negative people, places and things. .

If I had to give advice:
1. Stay focused on YOUR goals.
2. if you have no kids, get two jobs, put one check in the bank and pay bills with other. Find what your talent is; comedy, singing, making jewelry or art....
3.You should have 3 months pay saved in case of emergency.
4. Take advantage of the free library for internet (job hunting)
5. utilize your food pantry's through the churches
6. if you have security, you can rent a room at the larger YMCA
7. If you can get into a college, do it. you get a higher education but you also get to talk with other students who may know how to help you get the resources you need.
8. know that it is temporary, every day get up get out and do something!
9 every day you awake, is a good day and one that can start over with YOU!
